"Leaf primordia in the bud considerably exceed ament primordium. The first two leaf primoria corresponding to cataphylls of a young shoot are fringed with silky cilia at the very margin, glabrous on the outer surface. The outermost leaf primordium [here on the left] is very wide, broadly oval or reniform when spread, with parallel venation and completely embracing the rest of the bud content [right], so that its margins reach each other or even overlap." (Skvortsov 1960).
