A coastal northeastern North American dwarf shrub rare in Massachusetts, broom-crowberry blooms very early in spring. It belongs
to a small family, where there are only three genera. It is a member of a small two-species genus with amphi-Atlantic distribution.
The other species is on the Atlantic coast of Portugal.
