In
arrowheads carpels form winged achenes
when ripe. Each little achene has an
outgrowth at the top. These tiny
outgrowths together form characteristic
surface texture. This character is
species-specific and much used for ID.
In common arrowhead, for example, each
outgrowth is oriented flat on the
surface of the fruit head, so that the
entire head appears streaked.
