Periwinkle is a non-native (European) plant still heavily used as a groundcover. Its ability to penetrate and dominate natural communities does not stop home owners from using it, though alarming signs have become significant. In the Boxford Forest, for example, this plant covers a huge area starting from the Middleton Road Entrance. In that area it has become largely the only plant on the forest floor. The area becomes wider every year.
