The Asteraceae Family has been divided in two unequal subfamilies: the larger one, Asteroideae (or Tubuliflorae, as it was formerly called) and the more compact and natural Cichorioideae (or Liguliflorae), which includes Cichorium, Lactuca, Tragopogon, Crepis, Sonchus, Hieracium, Taraxacum, and others. Members of this subfamily have ray florets (or ligules) only in the inflorescence; all of them contain milky juice (latex).
