Other distinctive characters of American dog violet: toothed stipules (the longest teeth up to 2 mm); bearded lateral petals
of the pale purple flower; glabrous stems and peduncles. The sepals are narrowly lanceolate. The spur is less than 8 mm long.
In all violets there are small bracts on the peduncle.
